At New Gotham bus station, a thug (Rainbow Borden) is following a blonde woman (Lori Loughlin). He gives a local gang member named Spitz (Kristofer McNeeley) a call, looking to cash in on the price which has been placed on the woman’s head. Fitz warns the thug that if he looses her, the price will also be placed on his head. After hanging up, Spitz rushes to speak to Mr Hawke (Stephen McHattie). Hawke is annoyed that Spitz interrupted him, but immediately forgets the intrusion when he learns that Black Canary is back! In an alleyway, Black Canary beats the crap out of the thug and leaves.

Meanwhile at the Clock Tower, Huntress (Ashlea Scott) and Dinah (Rachel Skarsten) are sparring. Helena is trying to teach Dinah how to fight like a hero with the tough love approach by constantly knocking Dinah on her ass. However, after being put down yet again, Dinah looks at some of the weapons hanging by the door and they suddenly come flying towards Helena, knocking her legs out from beneath her feet. Both run to tell Barbara (Dina Meyer) what happened, and find her talking to the blonde woman that was jumped in the alley. Black Canary looks shocked, and exclaims "Dinah?" To which she replies "Mom?"

Both Oracle and Huntress are shocked to learn that not only did the Black Canary have a daughter, but also that Dinah was actually that daughter. Barbara and Helena quickly start babbling about Dinah's developing powers, but Black Canary asks for a minute to talk with her daughter alone. Dinah is surprised to discover that her mother is a superhero...and a pretty damn famous hero at that. Caroline Lance tells Dinah that she left to give her a normal life and had no idea that she was a meta-human. Initially she left Dinah the Redmonds because she thought it would be the best for her, but when she learned that they had locked her away because of her meta abilities, forcing her to run away, she had no choice but to come looking for her daughter.

Out on the balcony, Helena and Barbara make a decision to get involved in the brewing argument between Dinah and her mother. However, Caroline doesn't take it very well when Helena argues for Dinah's case - she warns Helena that the last thing Dinah needs is her influence. Apparently Black Canary had issues with Helena's mother Catwoman. As Barbara explains, its a bird-cat thing.

Meanwhile, somewhere in New Gotham, Spitz and Hawke torture the thug for loosing Black Canary at the bus station. He begs for his life and asks for a second chance to find the Canary...but Hawke is less than convinced he is up to the challenge so he kills him. Soon afterwards, Detective Reese (Shemar Moore) and his partner McNally (Brent Sexton) are investigating a John Doe that was found dead...its the same thug that Al Hawke killed. McNally gives Reese the details of the murder, telling him there aren't any prints but hopefully forensics will get something off the murder weapon. Not surprised by the development, Reese tells him that they won't find anything helpful and leaves the scene.

Back in the Clock Tower, Barbara and Canary chat about Dinah and the superhero life. Oracle tells Caroline that she never regrets the superhero life just because she's in the wheel chair. Caroline doesn't want the superhero life for her daughter but Oracle tries to convince her, telling her that Dinah has so much potential...mind melding, telekinesis and possibly even the infamous canary cry. Barbara also explains that she loves having Dinah with her and that she has the heart of a hero. Unconvinced however, Caroline says she'll protect her daughter no matter what...even if it means denying who she is.

As Reese leaves the crime scene and enters his car, Huntress drops down from above and quizzes Reese on the dead guy, but Reese warns her to stay out of it...he knows who the killer is. Helena tries to play the guilt card on Reese, but he uses the opportunity to try and get some info out of her for a change. As usual, Huntress refuses and Reese drives off.

Helena returns to the Clock Tower to tell Barbara about what happened with Reese. Dinah returns from her sleep over at Gabby's and she tries to talk with her mother, but the Delphi alarm goes off. Barbara gets a hit on the thug who was killed - he's a street man working for the Hawke family. After hearing the Hawke name, Caroline becomes a little panicked, and tells Dinah to pack a bag as fast as possible...Al Hawke knows she's here and they need to leave New Gotham! Dinah says she doesn't want to go and asks for Oracle's backing, but she reluctantly bows out of the argument - Caroline is her mother after all. Dinah gets upset because Caroline has only been her mother since she arrived in New Gotham. She goes off to pack her things. Helena instead has a shot at Caroline as she is the only one in the room who isn't a part of Dinah's life. Caroline in turn insults Helena's mother forcing Barbara to separate them before things get ugly. Caroline goes to help Dinah but discovers she's ran off.

That morning on the streets, Dinah goes to No Man's Land to see Gibson (Robert Patrick Benedict). He asks about Helena, but Dinah says she was just passing by. As Gibson pours her something to drink, he emails Oracle to tell her that she's there. Barbara tells Huntress to hold back and let Black Canary handle it.

Gibson tells Dinah all about the legend of Black Canary, how she was able to take down a New Gotham crime lord single handedly. He tells her that she's amazing in combat and graceful in person. As Dinah gets upset, a glass of juice moves and spills on its own. Gibson is shocked that Dinah has more powers than a simple touch telepath. Dinah asks him why her mother would ever give her up. Seconds later, Caroline arrives and explains she was trying to protect her. Overcome with adoration for the crime fighting legend, Gibson tries to get her autograph and rushes off to get a pen.

At the Hawke mansion, Al Hawke trains for his battle with the Canary, and provides Spitz with a collar that will stop her from using the canary cry. The two have a one-on-one, but Dinah tells her mother she's grown up and she missed it. Caroline admits there is nothing she can do to make up for it, but tells her why she gave her up. After returning home from fighting crime one night, she had a feeling someone had been there. She checked on Dinah who was fine, but because the feeling wouldn't go away she searched the house. Under Dinah's bed, she found a C4 explosive timed to go off in an hour. Fearful that her position as a crime fighter would endanger her daughter, Caroline done what she thought was best and gave Dinah a normal home. She offers Dinah her hand to find out if she's telling the truth but she refuses and runs off.

On the streets, Reese walks around thinking about the case. Huntress shows up and asks about Al Hawke, forcing him to go on the defensive. She offers to help him if he needs it, but Reese is reluctant. Back at No Man's Land, Canary runs after Dinah, but comes up against a bunch of goons working for the Hawke family. As she uses the canary cry, Spitz sneaks up and puts on the collar, rendering her harmless. They then take her to Hawke.

After a long walk home, Dinah arrives at the Clock Tower to find a worried Barbara. They tell her that they've lost contact with Dinah's mother and they fear that Al Hawke might have her. Helena checks in after beating the crap out of a low-life criminal. Apparently Al Hawke doubled the bounty on the Black Canary and someone cashed in on it. Overcome with grief, Dinah wants to rush off to the rescue, but Barbara is able to calm her down. She tells her that saving people is part of the job and to do that they need to think clearly. She then tells Dinah this is what being a superhero is all about.

At New Gotham Police Department, Reese is surprised when Huntress shows up in his office. She tells him that Hawke has taken a friend of hers. The Detective offers to help, but he'll need proof to get a warrant. Helena tells him that by the time that happens, she'll be dead. Reese goes on to say that although he doesn't know who she is or why she does what she does, but he doesn't want anything to happen to her. Reese gives her the location of a warehouse owned by Hawke where he is suspected of carrying out some of his wet works. Helena takes the address and rushes to the location.

Dinah tells Barbara she needs to go and help, expecting Barbara to argue against her. Instead, she gives Dinah the car keys and a comms device to help keep in contact with the Clock Tower.

At the warehouse, Hawke questions Black Canary, telling her that he feels at peace now that he has Caroline within his grasp. After she betrayed his father to the authorities, he watched his father rotting in prison, vowing to get revenge. He starts up a piece of machinery that tightens her restraints, with the plan of eventually squeezing her to death. As he watches, Huntress and Dinah show up. Huntress takes on Hawke's goons, while Dinah takes on the man at the top herself. Once Hawke is down, Dinah turns her attention to the machinery squeezing her mother. She can't stop it, and calls for Huntress to help. Busy fighting with Frankie Spitz, she hears Dinah calling but can't get away to help...at least not until Detective Reese grabs Spitz and lets Huntress help Dinah.

Caroline tells Dinah she's so proud of her and knows she'll be an amazing superhero one day. Just then, Hawke wakes up and grabs Dinah, strangling her. Nothing would make him happier than killing both the canary and her daughter in one night. As Caroline watches him choking the life out of her daughter, Dinah is able to use her newfound telekinesis to break the collar trapping her mother. Once free, she uses the canary cry to blast Hawke backwards into a pile of barrells. She then frees herself of her restraints and the three heroines try to make there escape.

As Dinah and Huntress run, Canary takes on the rest of Hawke's men with her powers, but eventually a fire gets started and the building explodes. Reese, now outside with Spitz, watches in horror as Dinah realises that her mother was inside with no chances of escape.

Later that night, Huntress shows up again at Reese's office, and offers him a ring that will let him communicate with her if he needs help. After Helena leaves, Reese goes to the New Gotham hospital to visit his father...Al Hawke! He tells him only a sick person will take pleasure in another persons pain, and that because of Caroline Lance's death he now has the evidence required to lock Hawke away. The gang leader is less than convinced, and asks Reese to call his mother and let her know he's ok.

Back in the Clock Tower, Dinah grieves for the mother she was just starting to know and Helena and Barbara try to comfort her.
