Episode Notes:
  • This episode marks Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec's first co-written episode.
  • "Concious" is the seventeenth episode directed by Ken Olin.
  • The rock formation where Jack and Sydney found the severed hand is the same rock formation that was featured in Roswell. It was also used in an episode of Star Trek.
  • At the start of the episode when Syd wakes up and meets with Jack, Vaughn and Lauren, you can see Melissa George struggling to keep a straight face in the background. During the filming of this scene, the actress was struck down with the giggles.
  • In the same scene, Sloane stands up without any problems despite the fact that he took a bullet for Jack the episode before.
  • Keep an eye in on Syd as she walks through the dessert with Jack - she struggles to turn her head as a result of her whiplash from the previous episode.
  • Face replacement was required for part of the Syd-Syd fight scene at the end because of Jennifer Garner's whiplash.
For the insects on the Rambaldi tattooed hand, the show required a specialist bug wrangler.
  • In the scene where Sydney punches Lauren, there were two additional versions filmed. One (at the request of director Ken Olin) had Melissa George with chewing gum chiclets in her mouth. When she was punched, the actress spat them out like teeth. In the other, Jennifer Garner and Melissa George looked like they were about to kiss.
  • Dr. Brezzel's lab was actually filmed in the building next door to the location of the opening scenes of this episode. Both buildings are in downtown L.A.
  • On the DVD audio commentry for this episode, Jennifer Garner dropped her ring during the recording process but continued to talk about the episode as she crawled around the floor looking for it.
  • The red room was constructed out of red carpet and the scene was filmed in the middle of the night.
  • This episode relied heavily on motion control, where a camera will copy the movements of the previous shot. This was done in the scenes where there would be two Sydney's.
  • The dream sequence where Syd goes head to head with Lauren as actually Melissa George's first fight scene.
  • The Director of Photography submitted this episode for an Emmy nomination.
