US ABC Ratings: Following swiftly from the previous installment (both "S.O.S" and "Maternal Instinct" ran as a single episode), Alias' second hour of the night received another ratings boost, reaching 5.3/8. It seems the return of Irina Derevko is enough to bring back some old fans.

Episode Notes:
  • "Maternal Instinct" first aired in America four months after the previous episode. The series went on an extended hiatus due to Jennifer Garners maternity leave.
  • This episode was part of an extended showing and followed immediately after the episode "S.O.S".
  • This episode marks Breen Fazier's sixth written episode and also Tucker Gates' second directed episode of Alias. Both are responsible for the episode "The Shed".
  • The location for the Prophet Five base was previously used in "Prelude" as the Embassy Syd infiltrates and the foyer of the bank in Vancouver has been used several times, including "Succession" (it's the one with the orange panel walls).
  • Leo 47-Norte, the SD-6 mission that located Horizon, was carried out 7 years before this episode in 1999. Alias is now set 2 years in the future so it should have been 9 years before.
