Quentin Tarantino’s appearance was a major let down. Not because of anything
he did or didn’t do, but because his screen time was barely over a minute
long and it was more like a short add-on to the episode. I suppose these kind
of appearances by big names are to be expected, but considering how involved
the character of McKenas Cole was in both parts of “The Box” in
the first season you can’t help but be disappointed.
At the same time however, he answered
a lot of outstanding questions about The Covenant and their
various
operations. If you didn’t
spot it in “Full Disclosure”, Tarantino put in a
brief voice appearance as one of the shadow panel who were overseeing
the ‘birth’ of Julia Thorne.
But Tarantino got more fun in his
minute than Vivica Fox did in the episode and I honestly don’t know why she was left
out. Her character of Toni Cummings has so much potential as
a suave pain in Sydney’s ass.
Thankfully, the under-used character gave Eric Weiss some much
needed action. Greg Grunberg is another under-used entity within
the series. The man is a comedy genius and in the opening episodes
of the season proved that he is able to carry on both the emotional
side of the show and the action spy adventures.
Although “After Six” contained the same blah terrorist
feeling of “Crossings”, it was given a fresh twist
with the collision of Lauren and Sark (a relationship which has
already earned the name ‘Lark’ on the web) in what
can only become the anti-Syd and Vaughn.
But to be honest, I think the true
reason for introducing this adulterous combo is not to add
a popular
romance to the show
(let’s face it, Syd and Vaughn aren’t going anywhere
fast and the chemistry between Lauren and Vaughn falls short
of the usual standard) but instead, is to actually take the heat
of Sydney.
In the last episode she became the other woman, the mistress.
The evil bitch from hell that destroys households and families.
And now? Syd is not the baddie because she only hooked up with
a married CIA agent, Lauren is knocking boots with a wanted terrorist.
I like the idea behind creating
a new evil dynamic duo – the
short lasting Sark and Francinator was a welcome feature, but
with Allision Doren now dead at the hands of Will Tippin, we
have lost that particular aspect to the series. Maybe now we’ll
get some of it back. But will it live up to expectations, or
will these two villains both sink to the levels of two-dimensional
terrorists trying to blow up the world.
