FEATURES: 'TAKEN' REVIEW

It’s about damn time Carl Lumbly got something to do. It seems as if since the season three re-tooling of the series, Dixon has become nothing more than Mr Briefing. It really is a shame, as we know just how talented Lumbly is so why not use him as much as possible?

Although “Taken” is a rather predictable instalment, it allows the actor to put his heart into the show much like he did in season two’s “Countdown.” The scene where Dixon prepares to pop a bullet into Sloane was oddly similar to when he attacked Will Tippin last season. But it was good to have some emotional push behind the show again. Since Sydney uncovered her missing time, there hasn’t really been much of a driving force. To bad it only lasted a single episode.

But the main highlight of the episode was the artefact that Sydney retrieved – a small Rambaldi box with the name ‘Irina’ inscribed on it. What does this box mean and what exactly does it hold?

Again though it seems as if the writers are struggling to give Sark something to do. What happened to the flexible freelancer who came and went as he pleased? Lets face it, Sark is not a terrorist so his continued involvement with The Covenant just doesn’t make much sense. He is a businessman, an entrepreneur…not some psycho with a bomb like in some blah action movie. Sark was once a real character, and like Lumbly it’s a shame to see David Anders going to waste.

What makes even less sense is Lauren Reed’s involvement with the organisation. She obviously cares for Marcus as a friend, her husband works for the CIA and her father is a US Senator. Why does she work for The Covenant?

But with the addition of Senator Reed, it was almost a certainty that her loyalties would be called into question, but I figured it would take a few episodes for that to happen. Alhough, Jack being the one to put the pieces together based on a single phrase is just classic Mr Bristow.

So with a little luck we’ll be getting some more spy-filled antics in the episodes to come, and not anymore of the weapons of mass destruction terrorism that the series has been running with for the last few episodes.
