>> Nielson Ratings
So how do the Nielson Ratings work? Well, the season three premiere, "The Two", gained a 5.9/9 Nielson Rating. Hundreds of households in random regions of America are given a Nielson box, which basically holds information on what show is being watched, and what age group that person is. So in the case of "The Two", 5.9% of televisions with Nielson boxes (including the ones which were switched off) were tuned in. However, this only accounts to there being one television per household, so if there are multiple television sets in a single household, they are not counted. The /9 is the market share, which basically eliminates all the television sets which werent switched on. So the season premiere actually had 9% of the viewers for that hour.
The only problem with this system is that if someone went out, and left the video recording Alias, they wouldnt be counted since their TV would be switched off. So the only way to increase the Nielson Ratings for the show is by encouraging friends and family to watch the show.
